Colorado Fitness Tech Startup Looks to Expand App Offerings

Local partnerships played into app success

DENVER, May 10, 2019When Kevin Allen and Fola Awosika moved to Colorado to launch their fitness app company, they had a very big dream – to overcome fitness barriers for all people. Landing in one of our nation’s most fit cities was part of that plan to fulfill their dream.

“The Boulder and Denver Metro areas have been acknowledged as fitness meccas for a while. We knew these communities were in alignment with our dream to bring fitness to the masses,” explained ROW ViGOR co-founder and CEO Kevin Allen. And they did not disappoint. They’ve not only partnered with area gyms to offer free group classes that increase awareness and downloads of the ROW ViGOR fitness app, but they also partnered with a public benefit video production organization.

“The opportunity to utilize a professional studio and editing experts was instrumental in creating the training videos for our app,” Fola Awosika, co-founder and VP of Fitness at ROW ViGOR continued, “The video production team at EON247 allowed us to realize our vision to produce high-quality live and recorded video classes while sharing our fitness techniques. This allowed us to roll the app out with high-quality instruction in various exercise modalities and within a useful and accessible smartphone application.” They both attribute the app’s early success to the quality and flexibility of the app which had over 1,000 downloads in January of this year alone.

Their launch period has been a growing success and is prompting the company to look forward quickly with expanded fitness offerings. Allen shares how the goal of overcoming fitness barriers began with a rowing app, “We knew the app needed to have cardio-rich workouts to maximize consumer health benefits in the least amount of time. During our research time, Fola and I quickly realized the opportunity to bring the most powerful cardio technique to the masses with rowing. However, our dream has always been to provide a variety of fitness offerings allowing the users to access their preferred exercise in any setting while reducing boredom with a full breadth of fitness classes.”

The team is nearing completion on those expanded offerings and plans to roll them out this summer.

“It is an exciting time as we approach the realization of our passion for world-class fitness being available to everyone and on their own devices,” Awosika said with an ear-to-ear smile. Fitness got him through so many stages of life and he loves sharing that passion with athletes, whether they are first-timers or Olympic contenders.

Local Startup Brings Cardio Health to the Masses

DENVER, March 6, 2019 — Local startup aims to break down fitness barriers with an app for smartphones. According to the American Heart Association, time and resource are two of the biggest barriers reported by those not regularly participating in fitness or physical activity.

“In order to help people meet their fitness goals and be more active, addressing these barriers for them had to be a priority,” said ROW ViGOR CEO Kevin Allen about the thought process of how to bring their app fitness idea to market. ROW ViGOR also wanted to ensure they rolled out an app that paired with cardio-rich workouts to maximize consumer health benefits in the least amount of time. During their industry research and consultations with Fola Awosika, Head of Fitness at ROW ViGOR, rowing and rowing machines quickly rose to the top.

According to a Live Strong article comparing cardio machines, Americans are losing out on the most efficient cardiovascular health machine in the gym and states “Rowing vigorously, a 125-pound person who works for 30 minutes will burn around 255 calories. Rowing puts less stress on your joints and builds muscle mass while working your heart and improving your cardiovascular health.”

GQ agrees that rowing machines, though seen in most gyms across America, are one of the most underutilized machines.

According to ROW ViGOR co-founder and CEO Kevin Allen, lack of rowing machine use at the gym is the result of lack of consumer education and intimidation, “Most of us know how to run, bike and climb stairs, so those machines in the gym are less intimidating. Someone looks at them and feels confident to jump on without a tutorial. The indoor rowing machine is intimidating for that same reason. Many Americans have not been exposed to either outdoor or indoor rowing and they are nervous about how to use the machine or, even worse, looking foolish once they get on the machine. However, with this being the most effective cardio machine in the gym we felt it was the best fit to launch our fitness app.”

Realizing that lack of familiarity reduced the use of rowing machines, the team was prompted to include rowing technique education within the fitness app.

“With every new ROW ViGOR app download, users are invited to review rowing technique in a 1-minute video,” explains Allen. The in-app video breaks down the 4 phases of rowing technique with pauses and text overlays to help reduce the rowing learning curve. But what if you don’t get the rowing technique after that one minute? It is accessible in the app’s on-demand instructional classes for review at any time.

“The key to getting the most benefit out of rowing is getting comfortable with the rowing technique,” explains co-founder and Head of Fitness Fola Awosika. “The fluid motion of the rowing machine contributes to the cardio and low impact benefits and also ensures that all major muscle groups are engaged for a full body workout with minimal chance of injury.”

Once the motion is mastered, new rowing fitness enthusiasts are on their way to all the benefits indoor rowing has to offer. Through the app they can challenge friends to a race, take a live or on-demand class and pair their rowing activity to bluetooth-enabled machines. People all around the globe are getting more out of their workouts with ROW ViGOR and joining a quickly growing community of fitness rowers. Plans for more classes, more content, and options for use with other fitness equipment are already being created.

ROW ViGOR is a Colorado-based, minority-founded, fitness technology company that provides a world-class cardio solution that democratizes the fitness experience by connecting content with fitness equipment – regardless of the make or model. ROW ViGOR has started accepting investments through MicroVentures allowing investments as little as $100 and without the need for investing accreditation or experience. This first round of investment opportunity ends March 18.
